How Did eCommerce Grow in 2020?

In 2020, online retailers became the solution for consumers’ essential and nonessential needs. Due to stay-at-home orders, touchless shopping, and social distance requirements, shoppers turned to eCommerce to meet their needs. As a result, the entire industry skyrocketed, and many retailers thrived by doubling and even tripling their sales. Here’s how it happened. 

Mobile Use

Since consumers spent more hours at home, their average amount of time spent on mobile devices increased. 39% of consumers say they used their smartphones more during last year’s lockdowns than any other previous time. Although many used this time to watch more videos and have virtual chats with friends and family, many more spent their time browsing and shopping from online stores. Unable to head out to typical brick and mortar stores and overwhelmed by new social distancing requirements, these consumers purchased everything they needed from eCommerce retailers.

Nonessential Purchases

Although online grocery shopping peaked in 2020, consumers spent more money on nonessential items. Impulse buys increased by 18% in the spring of 2020. Everything from leisure clothing to home office supplies flew off virtual shelves. Consumers searched for ways to stay comfortable while learning new hobbies or just attempted to make it through quarantine. Some of the top industries included home, pet, health and beauty, clothing, and entertainment.

Contactless Shopping

As the demand for eCommerce grew, traditional brick and mortar stores searched for immediate shopping and fulfillment solutions to keep their doors open. Even as the year progressed and some stay-at-home orders were lifted, consumers were no-longer comfortable making in-person purchases. They preferred home delivery options and curbside pick up. As a result, big brands like Best Buy, Target, and Kroger began incorporating online shopping options and saw exponential growth.

Even as 2021 progresses, eCommerce continues to grow. 56% of consumers tried a new retailer during the pandemic, and this same trend is predicted to continue in the new year.
